Fantasyland just took a hit. King Arthur Carrousel closed today for a 10-day refurb, Frontierland Shootin' Exposition closed indefinitely, and Matterhorn goes down in two weeks. Halloween Time is now only 6 weeks out, which means the planning window for a fall trip is closing fast. Here's what actually matters.
๐จ Trip-Planning Impact
King Arthur Carrousel closed today, July 6, and reopens July 16. If a Carrousel ride was on your toddler's must-do list this week or next, it's out. This one hurts โ it's one of the two or three rides in Fantasyland that works for a 2-year-old. Substitute plan: Casey Jr. Circus Train (similar low-stimulation, kid-friendly vibe) or Storybook Land Canal Boats. The Carrousel is scheduled to reopen the day before Disneyland's 71st birthday on July 17, which is either a nice coincidence or a calculated marketing move.
Frontierland Shootin' Exposition also closed today with no reopening date. Not a huge loss for families with young kids โ most 4-year-olds can't work the rifles anyway โ but worth noting if your 7-year-old was excited about it. Skip Frontierland's arcade corner and put that time into Big Thunder or Pirates instead.
Matterhorn Bobsleds closes July 20 for a brief refurb, back July 24. If you're visiting between July 20-23 and have a kid tall enough (35 inches) who wanted their first "real" coaster, plan around it. This is one of the rare weeks the timing genuinely matters.
๐ข Ride Status This Week
| Ride | Status | What Parents Should Know |
|---|---|---|
| King Arthur Carrousel | Closed July 6-16 | Substitute: Casey Jr. or Storybook Land Canal Boats |
| Frontierland Shootin' Exposition | Closed, no reopen date | Not a big loss for kids under 7 |
| Matterhorn Bobsleds | Closed July 20-23 | Heads up if visiting that week |
| Cozy Cone Motel | Rolling closures July 6-10 | Full details below in food section |
| Haunted Mansion | Closes August 8, back August 20 as Holiday overlay | Skip if visiting Aug 8-19 |
| Autopia (gas-powered) | Active โ but on a death clock | Ride before early 2027 if your kid loves it |
| Pirates of the Caribbean | โ Open with new animatronic | Slightly scarier for sensitive young kids |
๐ Halloween Time Is 6 Weeks Away โ Plan Now
Halloween Time officially starts August 21 and runs through October 31. For families with kids who love Halloween but hate anything actually scary, this is genuinely one of the best times of year at Disneyland โ day-park Halloween Time (as opposed to the after-hours Oogie Boogie Bash) is family-friendly, includes Haunted Mansion Holiday (Nightmare Before Christmas overlay), Cars Land Haul-O-Ween Roundup, and Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy.
The play if you're planning a fall trip: the last week of August and first week of September is the sweet spot. Halloween Time is active, crowds are still low because most schools are back in session, and the weather is still summer-warm. October gets progressively busier every week, and Halloween weekend itself is a nightmare crowd-wise.
Oogie Boogie Bash October dates are already largely sold out, but August and early September tickets are still available at the $139 tier. If your kid is 4+ and loves costumes, this is a top-3 Disneyland experience for the under-8 set.
๐ฟ Food Worth Knowing
Cozy Cone Motel is doing staggered closures this week. If your DCA day is Monday-Tuesday (July 6-7), Cone 2 (Ice Cream) and Cone 5 (Popcone) are down. Thursday-Friday (July 9-10), Cones 1, 3, and 4 are down. Not a crisis, but if a specific cone was your kid's promised treat, check the app before you commit. Everything's back open July 11.
Jamba at Downtown Disney closes today. It's being replaced by Bopo Go!, a boba/bubble tea spot from the folks behind Bopomofo Cafe. Not open yet โ the transition takes a few weeks. If your family relied on Jamba for a smoothie stop, plan on Nekter or a resort hotel juice bar in the meantime.
The Plaza Inn fried chicken meal remains the best sit-down value at Disneyland for families with kids who'll actually eat it. As Fantasyland gets more crowded with the Carrousel down, Plaza Inn is also strategically smart โ 3-minute walk from Fantasyland, doesn't require a reservation.
๐ฐ Deals & Tickets
Kids' Summer Tickets are still running โ kids 3-9 visit for as low as $50/day through September 7. Get Away Today consistently runs it at $48/day with their own savings layered on top, plus interest-free payment plans.
Fair warning on the summer window: the Kids' Summer Ticket expires September 7. If you're on the fence about a late-summer or Labor Day weekend trip, book by mid-August. Reservation availability tightens as the expiration approaches โ Disney's own terms explicitly warn about this.
๐ What We're Watching
Disneyland's 71st birthday is July 17. No massive celebration planned (they're winding down the 70th anniversary through August 9), but expect small cavalcade moments and possibly a limited-time treat or two. Not a trip-planning event, just fun context if you happen to be there.
Eastern Gateway construction officially begins. Disney is demolishing the Team Disney Anaheim East office building over the next few weeks to start work on the new resort entrance experience. Multi-year project โ doesn't affect any 2026 or 2027 trips directly, but expect Harbor Blvd traffic weirdness starting in fall.
D23 Day at Disneyland is August 13. This is when Disney typically announces the next round of ride refurbs, new experiences, and long-term plans. If you're on the fence about a trip in fall or winter, wait until August 14 to book โ you'll have better information about what's closing.
Coco Land coming to Disneyland (rumored). Multiple sources are now reporting that a Coco-themed land is in development for the DisneylandForward expansion, likely following the Coco 2 movie release in September 2027. Nothing confirmed, but worth watching if you have a Coco-obsessed kid.
