Disneyland News for Families โ€” Week of June 29, 2026

July 4th fireworks are back, Soarin' Across America debuts Thursday, and the new Pirates animatronic might be too intense for young kids. What this week's Disneyland news means if you're visiting with kids ages 2-8.

July 4th weekend is here. America's 250th anniversary means Disney is going big โ€” the "Celebrate America!" fireworks run three nights (July 3, 4, and 5), and Soarin' Across America finally debuts Thursday. Pirates is back open with a controversial new animatronic that's worth knowing about if your kid is sensitive. Here's the breakdown.

๐Ÿšจ Trip-Planning Impact

July 4th fireworks are this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 9:35 PM. The "Disney's Celebrate America! โ€” A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky" show runs three nights this year. For families with young kids, 9:35 PM is rough โ€” it's well past most under-5 bedtimes. Two real options: either commit to a late night (afternoon nap mandatory, plan for full meltdown recovery the next day), or skip the fireworks entirely. There is no in-between.

If you're going for it, the best family viewing spot isn't Main Street. It's the area in front of "it's a small world" โ€” significantly lighter crowds, easier stroller maneuvering, and a clear sky view. Main Street looks great in photos but the crush of bodies with a 4-year-old at 10 PM is a memory you don't want.

Soarin' Across America debuts Thursday, July 2. Soarin' Over California's last day is Tuesday June 30. The ride closes Wednesday for the swap, then opens as Soarin' Across America Thursday. New U.S.-only film celebrating America's 250th, same hang-glider mechanics, 13 locations across the country. For families with young kids: recognizable landmarks (Grand Canyon, Statue of Liberty, Yosemite) land better with 3-5 year olds than the world version's sensory-overload pacing. Worth planning a DCA day around in early July.

Pirates' new animatronic might be too intense for sensitive kids. Pirates of the Caribbean reopened Friday with a major change: the static skeleton-on-gold scene early in the ride now features a brand-new animatronic with a projection-mapped face that visibly transforms between human and skeleton as he picks up and drops a cursed coin. The Disney fan community is split on whether it's a brilliant upgrade or a desecration of a 59-year-old classic.

Here's the angle no one else is covering: this change makes Pirates materially scarier for sensitive young kids. The old static skeleton was creepy but inert โ€” kids could process it as "just a Halloween prop." The new version actively transforms in front of them with a realistic projected face. If you have a kid who's been on Pirates before and was borderline on the scary stuff, expect the borderline to tip the wrong way this trip. If you have a kid who's never ridden Pirates, I'd lean even more conservative on the age recommendation (5+ minimum, 6+ if they're sensitive).

๐Ÿ“Š Crowd Update

Disneyland has been weirdly quiet this month. Touring Plans has been rating most June days at crowd levels 2-3 (out of 10), which is remarkably low for early summer. A few theories floating around: the park hopping rule change shifted guest behavior, the early-summer heat wave kept locals away, and there's been less news to drive trip planning. Whatever the reason, this week and next are unusually favorable for a flexible family trip โ€” if you can pull a last-minute weekday visit before the July 4 weekend hits, do it.

๐Ÿฟ Food Worth Knowing

The Plaza Inn fried chicken meal remains the best sit-down value at Disneyland for families with kids who'll actually eat it. For July 4th specifically, mobile order anything you can before noon โ€” the post-fireworks rush is brutal and Plaza Inn's line gets out of control. If you've got grandparents handling the kids for an evening, the Gordon Ramsay at The Carnaby spot at Downtown Disney is inching closer to opening โ€” construction walls are down, soft open likely in the next 2-3 weeks.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Deals & Tickets

Kids' Summer Tickets are still running โ€” kids 3-9 visit for as low as $50/day through September 7. Get Away Today consistently runs it at $48/day with their own savings layered on top, plus interest-free payment plans.

Oogie Boogie Bash October dates are largely gone. If you wanted peak Halloween-week dates, you missed the window. August and early September dates still have $139 availability if you're flexible.

๐Ÿ‘€ What We're Watching

ABC airs "Disney Celebrates America: The Pursuit of Happiness" tonight (June 29) at 8 PM PT. Two-hour primetime special with segments from both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Decent family TV night option for kids who are excited about a future park trip.

Haunted Mansion closure was added to the calendar. Likely the annual Nightmare Before Christmas overlay conversion โ€” typically runs early-to-mid August. If your trip is in that window, plan without it. The overlay version is genuinely good but kids under 5 can find it scary, so the timing of the closure matters more than most refurbs.

70th Anniversary ends August 9. You've got 6 weeks left to catch the Celebrate Happy Cavalcade, Paint the Night, and the 70th-themed merch. Halloween Time kicks in August 21 โ€” only 12 days of "normal" park between the two events.
